Do you ever feel like something sweet and warm to drink but you’re not in the mood for caffeine? You’d like something sweet but also healthy!?
Our Bowl of Soul is just that.
When I was living at UC Santa Cruz at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, we used to make a version of this in the evening. We would pour almond or soy milk into a saucepan and add turmeric, cinnamon, pepper and honey. It is the nicest nightcap but is also so good in the morning or in the afternoon.
The alchemy of turmeric, cayenne and cinnamon works to enhance the potency of the anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-oxidant curcumin in the turmeric and to give it a sweet taste. We like to add honey but you can also add maple syrup or drink it plain.
Bowl of Soul: To make, add turmeric paste (find the recipe for turmeric paste at the link at the bottom of the page!), honey simple syrup and hot water to a small saucepan and stir until turmeric paste is dissolved in the mixture. Next, add milk to the saucepan and heat over medium high until hot. Then, pour the mixture into a bowl or cup. Finally, sprinkle with cacao powder and enjoy!
NOTE: For honey simple syrup, simply combine equal parts honey and hot water in a small container or bowl and stir until combined. Funnel into a glass container and keep refrigerated.
